One-on-One Tutoring in Kensington

Children in Kensington grow up walking past UNSW lecture theatres on the way to the shops, and the expectation lands early. We tutor around that, at your flat near Anzac Parade, online, or at our Double Bay study centre, fifteen minutes north. Every year group from Kindergarten to Year 12, IB as well.

Tutoring in Kensington

Built around your child, not a worksheet pack.

Kensington is a university suburb before it is anything else. UNSW sits on the land that was Kensington Racecourse until 1942, NIDA is at 215 Anzac Parade, and children here grow up walking past lecture theatres on the way to the shops. Parents notice that. The expectation arrives early, and so does the pressure, usually in the run up to the selective test and again at the start of Year 11.

The rhythm runs along Anzac Parade. Saturday morning is Kensington Park, on the corner of Barker Street, Cottenham Avenue and Edward Avenue, where Kensington Oval, just up Barker Street, takes rugby league in winter and cricket in summer, including lower grade Randwick Petersham matches. Midweek, Royal Randwick runs meetings on its Kensington track and the traffic thickens for an afternoon. Homework gets done in the gaps, and the gaps are narrower than they look.

Doncaster Avenue, Ascot Street and Goodwood Street all take their names from English racecourses, and Todman Avenue runs past Raleigh Park, built on the old W.D. and H.O. Wills tobacco factory site.

How lessons work

Three ways to learn in Kensington.

Kensington is mostly flats. At the 2021 census 71.4 per cent of dwellings were units and only 21 per cent separate houses, so homework often happens in a corner of the living room. Tutors come to Raleigh Park on Todman Avenue, to the older houses off Boronia Street, and to blocks along Anzac Parade, timing arrivals around a Royal Randwick meeting.

In your home

Your tutor comes to you, so there is no drive and no parking, and your child works in the space they already study in. It suits primary students and busy weeknights particularly well.

In a suburb this heavily unitised, a tutor who comes to you beats hunting for a free desk.

At our Double Bay centre

A quiet, purpose built room away from the distractions of home. Senior students and exam blocks tend to work best here, and parents often use the time for the school run.

Online

Live one on one over video with a shared workspace, so the tutor and student write on the same page. Ideal for sport seasons, travel weeks, and the day someone wakes up unwell.

Common questions

Kensington parents often ask

Yes, and it comes up often here. Kensington and the two selective schools share one road. Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Girls High School sit at the Cleveland Street end of Anzac Parade, a straight run north. We work on the reading comprehension and thinking skills the test actually asks for, rather than handing over drill sheets. Because sessions are one on one, a child who is strong in maths and shaky in writing gets the time weighted towards writing. No lock in contract.

Yes. Kensington is roughly 6.5 kilometres from our Double Bay centre, about fifteen minutes off peak, so in home lessons across the suburb are straightforward. That covers Raleigh Park and Todman Avenue through to Day Avenue and the Barker Street end. If you would rather come to us, the centre is at Level 2, Shop 10 and 11, 401 New South Head Road, Double Bay. Online lessons work well too, and plenty of families mix all three across a term depending on the week.

No, and the start of Year 11 is when the pressure usually lands. The step up from Year 10 is real, particularly in maths and the sciences, and most students meet it by working harder at the wrong things. What a tutor adds early in the senior years is triage, deciding what to redo properly, what to practise weekly and what can wait. She keeps her own teachers and her own courses. One hour a week with somebody watching the whole load is usually enough to steady it.

Tell us the year level and the subject, and we will match a Kensington tutor this week.

There is no contract and no joining fee, and we will come back to you within 24 hours with a matched tutor.
